Darryl and I visited--pretty town, nice folks, good garlic pizza someplace. :) But I was offered an assistantship in-state.

Kids on the campus here moved in last weekend. Classes start on Monday. They drive nicer cars than I do. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9089616.post-1156476304544784962006-08-24T23:25:00.000-04:002006-08-24T23:25:00.000-04:00Thanks, all. Most people around here think I'm a truly sick pup for looking forward to the students coming back, and I can whine about parking (or lack thereof) and traffic with the best of 'em, but I really do love this time of year.

The dangerous part is when I catch myself watching the students & thinking "gee, that looks like fun; I could quit my job and go back for another traditional degree..." Heh. (I love my job, but I'm even fonder of getting a paycheck that is sort of enough to live on. I won't be a full-time student again anytime soon.)Anne Haineshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17038705452206752521noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9089616.post-1156425604563297112006-08-24T09:20:00.000-04:002006-08-24T09:20:00.000-04:00A nice post, Anne! We're having the same experience this week at Loyola, thought I'd give it all up for Indiana in a second.

Nothing really does replace that first year of college, does it? You come out the other end sometimes so different, having experienced so much, that it's hard not to both envy and fear all the things these new freshmen will experience.

I hope IU is still treating you great!

bill c.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01427717199077604563noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9089616.post-1156362188926680982006-08-23T15:43:00.000-04:002006-08-23T15:43:00.000-04:00Thank you for the reminder, Anne. It's true: some of these kids (and faculty) are actually going to be worth the trouble!

I can only vaugely remember my first semester ages ago at that other university. I blame the memory loss on heat exhaustion and blondeness from all those hours of marching band rehearsal. I do know I loved academic life, and I guess that's part of why I work at my current school, too.

Of course, this doesn't mean I'm going to take it easy on this new crop. Time to put on my gruff face and interview for some new student workers!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06815323448839527273noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9089616.post-1156316817400072782006-08-23T03:06:00.000-04:002006-08-23T03:06:00.000-04:00Oh . . . nostalgic sigh. And yes, the street dances, and the fat orange harvest moons. Miss it. We're undergoing a similar transformation here in Vermillion this week as well.Artichoke Hearthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10146791543239011650noreply@blogger.com
