Shiny

Things may be quiet around here for a few days. I just got a shiny new laptop (it's very shiny!) and for a little while, most of my computer time will probably be spent transferring files from the old falling-apart one to the shiny new one, and getting used to the quirks of Vista Ultimate (which is also very shiny) and Office 2007.

The new laptop's name is Harriet2 (the old one is named Harriet). Bonus points to anyone who knows why I named it that. Hint: a laptop is also called a notebook. :)

It's nice not to have to stick the K key back on (with that tacky blue poster stuff... yes, I meant it when I said it was falling apart) every few minutes, and to have a hard drive that is not 95% full, and not to have the CD drawer pop open for no reason at random moments. Shiny!

The Spy?

I think it's Harriet the Spy. I wanted to be like Harriet when I was in elementary school, but was more like Beth Ellen.

Because of Harriet, I started keeping a notebook, and after about 50 of them, I finally enrolled in an MFA program.

I have wondered if that is why they named the blog Harriet on the poetry website, but that's probably a stretch.

Laurel & Pamela: Yep! You got it. Harriet the Spy is the best book in the whole wide world. I literally wore out several copies when I was around ten years old, and it also got me started keeping a notebook, which evolved into a journal.

That book taught me how to be a writer -- observe closely, write every day, take it seriously ("I do not go out to PLAY. I go out to WORK."), be aware of the consequences of what you write but don't let that necessarily change you.

The fact that Louise Fitzhugh died young is one of the biggest rip-offs of the world.

Shiny laptops are the best. Mine, tho already 6 months old, is still pretty gosh darn shiny, and I still love it. It is, of course, a mac, and those actually do shine in a bright light...

Congratulations Annie the Spy! I'm glad we're not the only ones with computer naming silliness. Julie just got a new desktop, Inga2. My workstation is Froderick. Julie's notebook was supposed to be Frau Blücher, but it scared the cats. Shiny!

I think Harriet the Blog is named after Harriet Monroe.

I'm the only writer-type-person who did not like Harriet the Spy, as a child. :( I hope I'm not banished.

Good old Harriet the Spy :)
When I finish my MFA I want to get a new laptop. Mine is pushing about 5 years old and is really really slow. It is named --The Craptop-- and was called that even when it was new. Can't recall how the name started but I think that may have been my husband's doing. Hmmmmm...

I like naming things. Don't most of us writers :)
